Alexis de Tocqueville saw in 1835 that American liberty stands on a three-legged stool: faith, economics, and civics. The faith leg is the moral foundation.
Without strong faith, liberty turns into license. People lose the habits of self-restraint, duty, and sacrifice that make self-government possible. Tocqueville warned: “Despotism may govern without faith, but liberty cannot.”
Scripture is clear:
- Galatians 5:1 – “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.”
- 2 Corinthians 3:17 – “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”
- John 8:32 – “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
- 1 Peter 2:16 – Live as free people, but as servants of God.
The Liberty Bell itself declares from Leviticus 25:10: “Proclaim liberty throughout all the land.”
Faith teaches that true freedom is not doing whatever we want — it is doing what we ought. It counters individualism and materialism that erode the other two legs.
The Tocqueville Liberty Institute exists to strengthen this faith leg so liberty can stand firm again.
Strong faith + sound money + civic virtue = lasting liberty.
